Moodle: Activities & Resources: Book Overview


The Moodle Book resource presents text, images, and multimedia in a series of pages that are grouped as “chapters,” which provides a useful way to organize important information for students. For example, the book can  house lecture notes or videos, multi-page study materials, or important documents. The content menu presents these chapters as an easily navigable table of contents that students click through, and each page or chapter of the book includes backward and forward navigation links. Students can access all materials in the book without exiting the resource or downloading files. In addition, student can access other activities and resources in the course using a menu at the bottom of each chapter.

Book chapters can have associated sub-chapters for further organization. Each chapter can have several sub-chapters, although sub-chapters cannot have further sub-chapters. For offline access, books can be printed in their entirety or chapter-by-chapter.

Best Practices and Considerations

When using the Book, consider the following:

  • Use the Moodle Book as a centralized place for uploaded course resources, including lecture notes, videos, documents, URLs, or any other item students should access. Consider adding all lecture resources to a book that is organized by topic. For example, convert PowerPoint presentations into chapter content by including information from PowerPoint bullets in a narrative form and embedding images, videos, and links. This creates a centralized multimedia resource for all course content for that week or module.

  • Be intentional about the organization of material in the book. “Chunk” your content into chapters and sub-chapters so students are not overloaded with too much text or information on one page. As you plan, remember that the book contains two levels of organization: chapters and sub-chapters.

  • Use the built-in formatting buttons in the text editor for adding headings, sub-headings, and alt-text, so that the content meets accessibility standards.

  • Use the book tool to create a digital course syllabus. Organizing the syllabus information in a Moodle book allows for quick editing and prevents having to upload new versions of a document. This will also make the information more navigable for students, as they can click chapter titles to find the information they need.
