Panopto: Creating an Assignment in Moodle

There are two steps required for creating a Panopto assignment within Moodle. The first step is creating the assignment in Moodle, and the second is creating an "assignment folder" in Panopto. Please see below for instructions on executing the two processes.

Please note, when you first Provision your Panopto Course in Moodle, an assignment folder will be created for you. Therefore you can skip steps 1-5 from the section titled Creating a Panopto Assignment Folder.

If you have finished administering your first Panopto assignment in Moodle, you'll need to close the Assignment Folder in Panopto. Once you've closed the assignment folder in Panopto, you can create a subsequent assignment should you wish to do so.

Creating an Assignment in Moodle

  1. Once again, please ensure you have Provisioned your Panopto Course in Moodle or it will only appear the assignment has been created successfully, however your students will not have access to submit assignments.
  2. Login to Moodle and select the course in which you wish to create an assignment.
  3. Navigate to the course topic where the assignment will be (found on the left side of the screen under menu labeled CONTENTS). In this example we have selected the first topic. Depending on your configuration, your contents and section names may look different than what is seen in this example.

  1. Now scroll to the bottom and click Create learning activity. In the window that opens, select Assignment.

  1. The most important step here, with regards to creating a Panopto assignment, is to click Submission types (on the left hand side) and ensure that you have check marked Online Text.  Also, unchecking the File Submissions checkbox will ensure students only upload their videos to Panopto and not directly to the Moodle course.

  1. Fill out the rest of the fields as you prefer. You can find more assistance in creating Moodle assignments in the following article link -- Moodle: Activities & Resources: Adding and Editing an Assignment.
  2. Once you are satisfied with the assignment's settings, click Save and return to course or Save and display. Either option will ensure you've saved the assignment to your course.

  1. If this is the first Panopto assignment you have created after provisioning your course, you can skip steps 1-5 of the section below. This is because one assignment folder will be created for you when your course is provisioned. You will only complete step 6 when the assignment is complete.

Creating a Panopto Assignment Folder

  1. Login to Moodle and click on the course in which you wish to create an assignment.
  2. Once you are viewing your course, locate and click on Course Tools.

  1. Locate the Panopto block and click on Course Settings. If you do not see the Panopto block or the Course Settings option you may need to Provision Panopto in your Moodle Course.
  2. You should now be viewing the Panopto settings for your respective Moodle course. On the left side of the window, locate and click Overview, and then Create Assignment Folder

If you do not see the option to "Create Assignment Folder", and instead see the name of your course with "[assignments]" at the end, for example "Fall CMST 4200 [assignments]", this means you already have an assignment folder ready to go. Please continue to the next step.

  1. You can now close this window. Your students will now be able to submit Panopto assignments to you.
  2. Once you are no longer accepting assignments, you will need to Close the assignment folder. Simply follow all the above steps; however, once you are viewing the Overview menu (seen in step four), you will now click Close.
