Description

Turnitin Feedback Studio is a feedback and plagiarism detection tool in Moodle that helps to improve writing and engages students in the feedback process. Students can only use Turnitin if an instructor creates a Turnitin assignment in a Moodle course. This assignment type automatically checks student work for originality by comparing submissions against journal articles, stored student papers, and other writing across the internet. It also offers a grammar checker to help students improve their writing. Graders can easily provide students with customized feedback or use the standard grademark tool for comments used frequently. Instructors can also create a Turnitin rubric or allow students to review each other's work. This activity can also be used to assess suspect submissions (e.g., assignments without works cited pages, assignments without drafts) even if no grade is assigned for the activity.

A Turnitin assignment produces a report as a result of the following variables, which can be refined by the instructor:

  • OriginalityCheck ensures original work by checking submitted papers against other web pages, student papers, and leading library databases and publications.

  • GradeMark is an online grading tool that helps save time and improve feedback, where standard and customized marks can be added on the student's document.

EULA Terms

With respect to Turnitin Service (OriginalityCheck, PeerMark, and GradeMark), this license shall extend to instructors employed by the Institution (“Instructors”), but only for their use in classes offered through Institution and provided that Instructors shall be subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement and shall be bound by its provisions as members of Institution. Institution shall be responsible for ensuring their Instructors comply with the terms of this Agreement. No other license is granted by implication, estoppel or otherwise.

Best Practices and Considerations

When using the Turnitin assignment, consider the following:

  • Provide clear instructions and expectations for students in the assignment description. In addition to the assignment information, such as word count or minimum number of pages, specify the type of files students can submit. Instructors frequently have trouble opening documents created in Pages, so students should use a more widely used format, such as .doc or .pdf. Turnitin accepts file sizes up to 100 MB.

  • Enabling OriginalityCheck ensures original work by checking submitted papers against other web pages, student papers, and leading library databases and publications.

  • Keep the number of “parts” to one, and make the maximum grade match the maximum grade for “Part 1.”

  • Create a detailed rubric or grading form using the Rubric Manager within the Turnitin assignment to ensure consistency in grading. Under “GradeMark Options,” use “Launch Rubric Manager” to create a custom rubric for the assignment. Note that a rubric/form accessed within Feedback Studio can neither be changed nor edited once it has been associated to a student paper.

  • Use Turnitin Grademark to give individualized student feedback using inline comments, marks, and audio feedback.

  • Use the Peermark feature to manage peer reviews.

  • The due date is a hard deadline unless you change the “Allow submissions after the Due Date” setting in the “Originality Report Options” menu.
