Below you will find answers to the most commonly asked questions about Moodle.

How can I change or remove my Moodle Profile photo?

User profile photos can now be removed or replaced. When a user profile is first created, Moodle attempts to retrieve the user's photo from the LSU TigerCard system. If your photo is not transferred or if you wish to replace or remove it, see GROK 20484, Moodle: Edit User picture.

How do I change my preferred name in Moodle?

Moodle allows a user to change their first name to a preferred name only once. To learn more about this, please see GROK 20177, Moodle: User Preferences: Setting a Preferred First Name. Last names or official names on record must be changed with the Office of the University Registrar at the Registrar's Name & SSN Changes webpage. After this process, the updated name will be reflected in Moodle the next time you are enrolled in a course through the mainframe. Please note that this does not include courses with manual enrollments, such as training or Community Moodle courses.

How do I change my Moodle password?

Your Moodle login information is the same as your myLSU login information, and you can manage your password in your myLSU Portal. Please see GROK 15676, myLSU Portal: myLSU account Password Change for more information.


Student FAQs

How do I view my Moodle courses?

Once you have logged in to Moodle with your myLSU login information, click on My Courses in the top right corner to see the course cards for all courses available to you.

It is before the start of the term, why can’t I find my current Moodle Courses?

You will be enrolled in your Moodle courses for the upcoming semester starting 14 days prior to the first day of class. If you do not see a course you are enrolled in, your instructor may still be working on the Moodle course content and have the course hidden. Please check Moodle closer to the first day of the term to view the course.

Classes have started, why can’t I find a course in Moodle that I just added?

After adding a course via Schedule Request, you will be added to the course in Moodle overnight. Please check Moodle the next day to view the course or contact the primary instructor of the course to have them manually reprocess the enrollment.

Why do I still see a course in Moodle that I have dropped?

After dropping a course you will be removed from the course in Moodle overnight. Please check Moodle the day after your drop is processed to ensure you have been unenrolled from the course.

Why can’t I find the Moodle courses I was just taking?

Courses are hidden from students about a week after final grades are submitted. If you are granted an extension, your instructor can make the course visible again.

Why do I still see a Moodle course from a previous term?

Courses are hidden from students about a week after final grades are submitted. Sometimes there is a delay in hiding courses. Other times an instructor has made a course visible for a student to complete their work for an extension.

How can I hide courses I don’t need?

It is not possible for students to hide courses on the My Courses page. However, you may "favorite courses" to alter the order in which your courses appear.

Why does my grade in Moodle not look correct?

Please review your syllabus and contact your instructor about your course grade. Some instructors choose not to use Moodle’s gradebook, may use it in a different way than other instructors, or there may be a delay in grading. Again, your course syllabus should be your primary grading reference and all grade questions should first be directed to your instructor.

Faculty FAQs

Why can’t my current Moodle courses be found?

If you are assigned as the instructor of record in mainframe, your Moodle courses will be created 30 days prior to the first day of class. Instructors can extend this timeframe to a maximum of 60 days. For more information, please see GROK 20171, Moodle: Blocks: CPS: Creation & Enrollment Settings.

Why can’t enrolled students find my current Moodle course?

The Visibility setting in Course Settings determines whether or not the students enrolled in the course can view the course. The default setting is "Hide." When the course is ready for students, you must change this setting to "Show." For more information, please see GROK 19861, Moodle: Make a Course Available to Students.

Why can’t my student with an extension see my Moodle course?

About a week after final grades are due, Moodle courses from the previous term are automatically hidden. This removes student access and moves the course to the Hidden courses area of the My Courses page. Instructors can make courses visible again in the course settings area, if necessary. It is strongly recommended that courses are hidden again after all course business has concluded. For more information, please see GROK 19861, Moodle: Make a Course Available to Students.

Why can’t I find the Moodle Courses I was just teaching?

About a week after final grades are due, Moodle courses from the previous term are hidden. You will now find these courses in the Hidden courses area of the My Courses page. You may "favorite" a hidden course to have it appear at the top of your course listing.

Why does it take so long to load or backup my course?

The overall size of your course may slow your backup or loading time. To reduce the size of a course, use a combination of strategies including storing videos in Panopto, resizing to smaller images, and adding a resource’s URL instead of a large file. It is not recommended to directly upload a video file to Moodle, as this can slow down the load time and exceed the course limit (500 MB) for restoring. Store videos in Panopto (see GROK 17456, Panopto: LSU Overview, for more information). Consider the desired use of images when selecting the image resolution and have a program or software for resizing the files. For larger files, you may want to consider recording a video to present large PowerPoint presentations and using Panopto or linking to a shared drive (for more information see the following articles: GROK 16855, Box: LSU Overview, and GROK 17745, OneDrive for Business: LSU Overview).
