Moodle: Activities & Resources: Add a Link to a Website

A URL (Uniform or Universal Resource Locator) is a link on the internet to a website or online file. Instructors can use the URL resource to provide their students with web links for research, saving the student time and effort in manually typing out the address. The URLS can be displayed in various ways - see the URL resource settings for example, opening in a new window so a student can access and use the URL, close it and return easily to their original Moodle course page.

Add the URL Resource:

  1. Log into Moodle and select your course. Navigate to the section in which you want to add a link.

  2. Click Create learning activity, select the Resources tab, and choose URL.
Add URL resource to a course.

  3. Enter a title for the link, and type or paste the URL into the External URL field. Adding a description is optional.

NOTE: When you paste URLs, make sure there is only one "http://" at the beginning of the address. If you have more than one, your link will not work.

  4. Under Common module settings, choose how you want the link to display. The options are:

    • Show on course page makes the link visible to students.

    • Hide from students makes the link invisible to users with the student role.

    • Make available but not shown on course page puts the link in "stealth" mode. The link will be invisible to students but can be linked in another section, resource, or activity in the course. This is meant to save space on the course page.

  5. Edit access permissions under Restrict access. The URL can be restricted based on a prior activity completion, date, grade requirement, user profile fields, or a combination of nested restrictions.

  6. Edit Activity completion settings. By default, students can manually mark this resource complete. The other options include requiring students to view the resource, and not to indicate completion.

  7. Add Tags, which are keywords related to the link that will appear in the course Contents search.

  8. Click Save and return to course. The link will appear on the course page according to the settings you chose.

Important Notes

  • If the website DOES NOT open when the link is clicked, it is probably because the Location Address or URL is NOT CORRECT.
  • You can fix this by editing the Link. To edit the link, click on the pencil icon below the URL resource to access the settings.
