Cloud Storage Services

Storing your electronic data in the Cloud is a great way to keep your data Secure and Accessible. Once the internet-enabled device is configured, your data files can then be accessed, managed, and shared. Please see the links below for general overviews of all services:

  • Box - A cloud storage tool that allows you to store all of your data files in a secure off-site location with no maximum storage limit.

  • OneDrive - A cloud storage service by Microsoft that allows you to store all of your data files in a secure off-site location.

  • FilesToGeaux (FTG) - A storage tool providing TEMPORARY storage space for anyone with a MyLSU Account ID.  Allows the sharing of VERY LARGE files.  Files are securely shared to anyone with access to the internet.  

  • Microsoft Teams - A platform that combines instant messaging, calls, file and app sharing, and virtual meetings in one online workspace; integrated with Office 365.

 

Comparison Table

LSU ITS now offers OneDrive, Teams, and Box to the LSU community. We aim to assist in comparing the features of all three services for those who are trying to decide which service may best suit you and your team's needs.

While OneDrive and Box are primarily file storage services, Teams is a group communication software with functionality similar to Slack and GroupMe.

Below you'll see a table which compares all three main cloud services by looking at:

  • Maximum File Size
  • Storage limit 
  • Maximum directory folder depth/file path length 
  • Ability to collaborate internally or externally
  • How to acquire the respective service
  • Users eligible to use the service.

Note that FilesToGeaux is not included here, as it is intended as a sharing solution for temporary files only.

 * While it is technically possible to exceed 4 folders deep in box, we highly recommend not to do so in order to avoid severe "folder maze" / disorganization sprawl with your data long term.
