General Information

Ubuntu is a well known and widely used variation of Linux that focuses on user-friendliness with an open source mantra. It is completely free in its entirety and updated continuously, supported by only donations, business services, and community volunteers. It boasts a firewall, antivirus, accessibility options, and cloud software service all built in, and offers an optional version for Chinese users called Ubuntu Kylin. There are nine variations (called "flavors") of Ubuntu, but the main version is the most common one.

Download Link and Installation Instructions

To install Ubuntu, you will need to burn it to a CD (or create a LiveUSB installer on a USB drive) and insert it, then restart your computer. You may also need to change the order of your boot devices within your computer's BIOS to have CD or USB listed first, which is explained in the article Windows 8.1: Change the BIOS Boot Order.
