High Performance Computing (HPC): LSU Overview

General Information

The High Performance Computing (HPC) at LSU, or HPC @ LSU, is a joint partnership between LSU's Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) and LSU's Information Technology Services (ITS). We promote scientific computing and technology across all disciplines, enabling education, research and discovery through the use of emerging, advanced technologies. HPC @ LSU provides the infrastructure and support necessary to facilitate heroic research efforts, utilizing cutting-edge technology to push the limits of scientific discovery.

Resource Eligibility

Through HPC@LSU, University faculty, staff and students can access LSU’s supercomputers, Super Mike 2 and SuperMIC, and other high-performance computing systems on campus. HPC@LSU provides system administration and consultation support for the Louisiana Optical Network Infrastructure (LONI) supercomputers as well.

Serving as a central point to access all HPC resources and user expertise at LSU and LONI, HPC@LSU provides production HPC cycles and services to researchers on campus, the state, throughout the nation, and across the world.

In order to use HPC computational resources at LSU, users must first request an account. LSU faculty, research staff, graduate and undergraduate students, research collaborators, and other affiliates are eligible to request an account. Accounts and usage of the HPC@LSU resources are offered at no financial charge, but carry a value of approximately $0.1/core-hour.

Users are, however, asked to acknowledge their use of LSU HPC resources in resulting publications and reports with the following statement:

Portions of this research were conducted with high performance computational resources provided by Louisiana State University (http://www.hpc.lsu.edu).

Request an Account

User Accounts on LSU HPC Systems (Super Mike 2, SuperMIC, or Philip) require a valid LSU e-mail address and an LSU-Affiliated account sponsor. LSU faculty members can sponsor their own accounts, while students, postdoctoral researchers, or research associates may use their advisor as their sponsor. Non-LSU collaborators must be sponsored by an LSU faculty member. Upon making a request, a form will be emailed to you with a link to the account creation page. Once the form is submitted, and the information verified, the account will be created.

In order to use the LONI Computational Resources, first request a LONI Account. Any LONI affiliate or a collaborator of a LONI affiliate may request a LONI account. For more information, visit the LONI Web Site.

For more information on Accounts, see following article:  Accounts: LSU Overview.

Access & Manage an Account

For HPC Account Holders:  To log in, change your password & update the contact information in your user profile.

For LONI Account Holders:  To log in, change your password & update the contact information in your user profile.

Allocation of Computer Usage

An Allocation is a block of computer time measured in core-hours.  The number of Processing Cores requested times the amount of Wall-Clock Time used in hours.

Users of LSU@HPC computational resources may be required to request an allocation of compute time for some resources.

All LONI HPC users must request an allocation of computer time.

All requests require submission of a proposal justifying the use of the resources.

Training & Support

HPC@LSU provides Consultation and Administrative Support for both LONI & the LSU Supercomputers.
