Moodle 3: Activities & Resources: URL Settings

Instructors are able to display a link to a website that is outside of Moodle. For instructions on adding a URL to a course, see Moodle 3: Activities & Resources: Add a Link to a Website.

URL Settings

General Settings

In the General settings, the instructor must provide a name for the URL. The link needs to be entered in the External URL field, but the description is optional. If instructors use the "Choose a link" button, they can link to a document, image, or video in one of their cloud drives (Box, Flickr, YouTube, etc.).

Appearance Settings

In this section, instructors must decide how the webpage will be displayed. The options are Automatic (displayed in the same tab/window), embedded in the page, in a new window, or in a pop-up window. Depending on the selection, instructors can designate the size of the window.

URL Variables Settings

Using URL variables is optional and is not usually necessary. Some internal Moodle variables may be automatically appended to the URL. Type your name for the parameter into each text box(es) and then select the required matching variable.

Common Module Settings

These settings specify the visibility of the link for students (Hide/Show).

Restrict Access Settings

The link can be restricted based upon a date, group, activity completion of another activity/resource in the course, etc.

NOTE: If more than one restriction is added, students must meet EACH of the requirements before the URL becomes available.

Activity Completion Settings

By default, students can manually mark the link as complete, but an instructor can change this to be required. If required, the students can be marked complete by viewing the link.

Tags Settings

Tags are keywords that can be added to an activity or resource.
