  • Activity name (required) - the title of the External Tool.

  • Activity description (optional) - allows the administrator to provide information on the External Tool and any other additional details.

  • Display description on course page (checkbox) - allows the administrator to enable or disable the display of the External Tool description on the course page just below the link to the activity or resource.

  • Display activity name when launched (checkbox) - allows the administrator to enable or disable the display of the External Tool name above the tool provider content when launched.

    • NOTE: The title is never displayed when the tool's launch container is in a new window.

  • Display activity description when launched (checkbox) - allows the administrator to enable or disable the display of the External Tool description when launched. 

    • NOTE: The description is never displayed when the tool's launch container is in a new window. 

  • Preconfigured tool - allows the administrator to set up a secure communication channel between Moodle 3 and the tool provider. It also provides an opportunity for configuration defaults and has additional services provided by the tool such as: 

  • Launch/cartridge URL - indicates the web address of the External Tool. A cartridge URL may also be entered which automatically fills the rest of the forms details. 

  • Secure launch URL - this URL will be used instead of the launch URL if high security is required. Moodle 3 will use the secure launch URL instead of the launch URL if the Moodle site is accessed through SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), or if the tool configuration is set to always launch through SSL. 

  • Launch container - affects the display of the tool when launched from the course. The following launch containers are available:

    • Default - use the launch container specified by the tool configuration.

    • Embed - the tool is displayed within the existing Moodle window.

    • Embed without blocks - the tool is displayed within the existing Moodle window with just the navigation controls at the top of the page.

    • Existing window New window - The tool opens in a new window, occupying all the available space.

    • NOTE: Depending on the browser, it will open in a new tab or a popup window. It is possible that browsers will prevent the new window from opening.

  • Consumer key - similar to a username used to authenticate access to the tool. It can be used by the tool provider to uniquely identify the Moodle site from which users launch into the tool.

  • Shared secret - similar to a password used to authenticate access to the tool. It should be provided along with the consumer key from the tool provider.

  • Custom parameters - settings used by the tool provider. For example, a custom parameter may be used to display a specific resource from the provider. Each parameter should be entered on a separate line using a format of "name=value"; for example, "chapter=3".

  • Icon URL - allows the icon that shows up in the course listing for this activity to be modified. Instead of using the default LTI icon, an icon which conveys the type of activity may be specified.

  • Secure icon URL - used if the user accessing Moodle securely through SSL. The main purpose for this field is to prevent the browser from warning the user if the underlying page was accessed over SSL, but requesting to show an unsecure image.
