Moodle 3: Activities & Resources: Quiz Question Types: Calculated


Calculated questions offer a way to create individual numerical questions by the use of wild cards that are substituted with individual values when the quiz is taken.

To Create a Calculated Question

1. Open Moodle and select your course.

2. Turn editing on by clicking the Edit button, located at the top-right corner or the page.

3. In the Administration block, click the folder next to Question Bank then select Questions underneath it.

4. Click Create a new question.

5. Select Calculated.  (For more information on how each type of question works, click here: Quiz question types.)

6. Click Add.

7. Select the Category from the drop-down menu, then click Update the category.

8. Enter the Question name & text which are Required Settings for the Calculated Question.

9. The Answer section has optional settings including the Correct answer formula, Grade, Tolerance, Tolerance type, Correct answer shows, Format, and Feedback to be displayed after a student finishes the quiz.

10. The Unit and Unit Handling sections have optional settings that allow the instructor to require if students must have units in their answer.

11. Penalty for multiple tries is required, and will change the percentage deducted for incorrect tries.

12. Tags is an optional feature that allows an instructor to assign key words pertaining to a specific question.

13. Save the question.
