Policy Statements (PSs) are created for the purpose of institutional governance by way of establishing standard procedures for the operation of the university.  More information can be found on the LSU University Policies website.

Who Can Write A Policy Statement?

This information is for BOTH  (a) the Revision to an Existing Policy Statement  AND  (b) the Proposal of New Policy Statements.   All new Policy Statement drafts and Policy Statement changes REQUIRE Chancellor Approval.

1. Make Updates to an Existing Policy Statement  OR  Create a Draft of a Proposed Policy Statement.

2. Forward the Draft Policy Statement, through your Local Departmental Administrative Manager, who will route to the Office of the Provost.  

** This will begin the process which will provide an Administrative Review by the Vice Chancellors.  (Reviews by others are also conducted, as needed.) **

3. Once the Drafted Policy Statement is Approved by the Vice Chancellors (with or without modification), it will either be reviewed by the University Legal Counsel  or submitted directly to the Chancellor for FINAL ACTION.  
 

Information to Include (Writing Guide)

  • A Statement as to the Purpose of the Policy.
  • Define unknown words (as needed) to ensure broad understanding of the Policy.
  • The Proposed Policy Statement.
  • The Source of the Policy.
    • For example, the Campus Interpretation of an LSU System Permanent Memorandum, policy based upon or required by Federal or State Law, a revision of an Existing Policy, etc.
  • The Implementation Plan, which answers the question How will the Proposed Policy Statement be Implemented?
    • This section will contain either:  (a) An Outline of Operating Procedures   OR   (b) A designation of the University Offices & Departments which are responsible for the Implementation of the Policy.
