LSUMail: Set Up Microsoft Outlook 2013

  

Getting Started

This article explains the steps for setting up LSUMail on Microsoft Outlook. LSUMail is a hosted service provided by Microsoft Online Services.  

  • NOTE:  Theses instructions and images are from a Windows 7 computer.

Before Beginning

Are you already using Outlook with another e-mail account?  
Then  Set up a new Outlook Profile and Configure it to access LSUMail.

Is this the First Time you are using Outlook on this computer? 
Then open Outlook,  Specify the Microsoft Exchange Service and  Skip to Step 8.
 

Configure LSUMail in Microsoft Outlook

Set up a New Outlook Profile:

1. Click on your Start button.

2. Select the Control Panel.  

3. Depending on your operating system, you will either see a User Accounts icon or a Mail icon.

  • If you see the Mail icon: 
    • Click the Mail icon.
    • Skip to Step 4.

There is a sidebar with nine links listed, they are called Control Panel Home, System and Security, Network and Internet, Hardware and Sound, Programs, User Accounts, Appearance and Personalization, Clock Language and Region, and Ease of Access. In the main part of the window, there are four sections called User Accounts, Windows CardSpace, Credential Manager, and Mail. The Mail section is highlighted with the cursor over it.
 

  • If you see the User Accounts icon:
    • Click the down-arrow in the View By:  field at the upper right corner.  
    • Select Large icons from the drop down menu in order to see the Mail icon.

Control Panel in Windows Explorer. There are eight sections called System and Security, Network and Internet, Hardware and Sound, Programs, User Accounts, Appearance and Personalization, Clock Language and Region, and Ease of Access. There are many options under each section. At the top right of the window, there is a View as option. When selected, it shows a drop down list with Category, Large icons, and Small icons as options. The Large icons option is selected with the cursor over it.      


4. Click Show Profiles. (May not appear for all users.)

Mail Assistant window. There are three sections called Email Accounts, Data Files, and Profiles. In the Profiles section, there is a Show Profiles button. The cursor is over this button.


5. Click  'Prompt for a Profile to be used' if you have other Outlook Profiles that you want  to continue using.  With prompting, you can select which e-mail account to connect to when you bring up Outlook.  

6. Click Add to create a New Profile for your LSUMail Account.

General Mail settings window. There are mail profiles listed in a white box, but there is only one profile there, named outlook. Underneath the white box, there are four buttons called Add, Remove, Properties, and Copy. The Add button is highlighted.


7.  Enter a Profile Name, the default name is 'Outlook' but if that name is already used, then use the name: 'LSUMail'.

Outlook New Profile window. There is a small text box at the bottom left of the window asking you to enter a Profile name. On the right of the window, there are two buttons, OK and Cancel. OK is on top, and cancel is below it.


8. Enter [Your Name] and [Your LSU E-mail Address (ex. mtiger2@lsu.edu)]

  • You may be asked to enter your LSUMail Password.   (REMEMBER:  This is NOT your PAWS Password.)

  • If you do not enter a password at this point, you will be prompted to enter it when Outlook opens.

   *NOTE:  DO NOT SELECT the "Manually configure server settings" option. 


Add New Account window. There are three options for account settings called E mail account, text messaging SMS, and Manually configure server settings or additional server types. E mail account is selected. In the top box under E mail account, there is a text box for your name. In the box underneath this, there is a text box for your e mail address. At the bottom right of the window, there are three buttons called Back, Next, and Cancel. Clicking Next brings you to the next step.


9. Outlook will automatically determine your e-mail server and other settings. 

Add New Account window after the account settings are finished. There are messages on the window indicating that the email settings are being automatically configured. There are three steps for this. The first one says establish network connection and it has a check mark next to it, showing it is done. The second step says Search for e mail address server settings, and that has an arrow next to it, indicating it is being completed. The third step, Log on to server, has no icon next to it so it will be completed last.


10. Click Finish. You are successfully configured when you get the Congratulations! screen below.

A message in the center of the window says the e mail account has been successfully configured. There are three buttons at the bottom called Back, Finish, and Cancel. The Finish button is highlighted.


11.  Open Outlook (The first time you open Outlook after configuring may take a few minutes.  Be Patient.)

  • If the new Profile was set as the default profile, Outlook will use that one when it opens. 
     
  • If the New Profile was set to have Outlook Prompt for a Profile, then you will be prompted to select your LSUMail Account.
