Removing Spyware, Adware, and Other Malware

This tutorial is for spyware, adware, and other malware removal. Before proceeding, please read through this entire tutorial.

Every virus is different and there are no tools that can fix every problem. This tutorial guides you through how to remove the most common types of infections. Usually what is perceived as a virus will typically be some other sort of malware that this tutorial will help to remove.  In this tutorial you will be asked to place all of your downloads and extractions on your Desktop for easy access. You may Delete any found viruses after running these tools.  

It is suggested that during the scanning procedure, please do not run any other applications at the same time, in order to prevent slow scanning and possible interference.
 

Boot into Safe Mode (Advanced)

  • Note: This is for advanced virus removal only- for example, if the computer starts up extremely slowly or if the malware blocks the antivirus software from running. Most users do not need to do this and may skip to the Perform a Scan on your Computer section below.

1. Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode.

How to Boot into Safe Mode

  • Restart your computer:  (Click Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart.)
  • Windows will log off.
  • Press F8 until you are presented with the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

Important Notes:

  • On some computers; if you begin click on F8 too soon an error message with Keyboard Error will occur.
    • To resolve this issue, Restart your Computer and try again.

2. Select Safe Mode with Networking and click Enter.

3. Select the Operating System you were currently using and click Enter. There is usually only one Operating System option:  Windows.

4. Click Enter to continue booting into Safe Mode.

5. Expect to see a list of multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\, this is normal.

6. Log in with your PAWS ID and Password at the Log In Screen.

7. Click Yes to continue on to Safe Mode when you see the Desktop Window.
 

Perform a Scan on your Computer

MALWAREBYTES

1. Locate the shortcut labeled Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on your desktop and double-click it.

2. Click on Scan to begin the scanning process.

  • This process may take between 30 minutes and 3 hours, please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, you will be presented with a message: “The scan completed successfully."

3. Click ‘Show Results’ to display all objects found.”

4. Click OK.

5. Click Show Results to view the results.

6. Make sure that everything is checked then click Remove Selected.

7. When the disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart your computer.

  • If Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.  
    • Click OK to both and let Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware proceed with the disinfection process.
  • If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Remember to save all your work and close any other programs before clicking "Restart Now".

8. Exit Notepad.

9. Click OK. 

10. Exit Malwarebytes.

11. Restart the computer.

  • Click Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart.

12. Delete the following 2 files from your desktop:

  • mbam-setup.exe
  • ccsetup215.exe
