General settings

In the General settings, the instructor can designate a title and provide a description or prompt for the assignment. The Instructor can also provide additional files, which might include a rubric or sample of what is expected from students.

Availability

The first date (if enabled)  specifies the date student can begin submitting their assignment. The Due date is a soft deadline, and allows students to turn in work late. (If late, the submission date/time will be marked in red.) If an instructor choosed to use a Cut-off date, the date and time is a hard deadline, and studets will NOT be able to turn in work once time has expired.

NOTE: Moodle uses the 24-hour clock, so 10:30pm would be set as 22:30.

Submission types

In the submission types section, you can change the form in which students will submit assignments. You can set a word limit amount and maximum number of files to be uploaded. However, the maximum submission size is limited to 10MB. The Word limit is a maximum number of words, and can only be enabled if the submission type is Online text.

Feedback types

In the Feedback types tab, you can adjust how the students will receive feedback on their submissions. There is the typical feedback method that is offline feedback, and then there is online feedback, which consists of online comments or files. Click the box next to the option you want to use.

If you change the Comment inline option to "Yes", the submission text will be copied into the feedback comment field during grading, making it easier to comment inline (using a different color, perhaps) or to edit the original text. (Note that this option only works for Online text -- not for file uploads.)

Submission settings

The instructor can specify if students must acknowledge the submission statement, require students to click a submit button, and provide any additional attempt. If instructors require additional steps, and keep the Attempts reopened setting at "Never," students will NOT be able to resubmit their assignment. If the instructor keeps all of the default settings, students can edit or resubmit their assignment up until the due date.

Group submission settings

In the Group submission tab, you can change the settings for the submission type if you want to use a group submission. Turn the group submission feature on or off using the first drop down box in the tab. The remaining drop down boxes can be used to require groups to submit, require individuals to submit, and change the grouping options.

Notifications

If the notification settings are changed for graders (instructors, TA's etc.), they will receive an email for every submission. The setting for "Notify students" refers to the time when they receive a grade. By default, if their assigment is graded, the student will receive an email notification. You can change this setting for whole class here, or on an individual bases when grading each student. (NOTE: the notification is sent ONLY if the assignment is graded through the activity. Students will NOT get an email if the grade is manually entered in the gradebook.) See Moodle 3: Activities & Resources: Grading an Assignment.

Grade

In the Grade tab, you can change the settings of how the students will be graded for the assignment. Under 'Type', if "None" is selected, the assignment will not be added to the gradebook. Although there is an option to use a Scale, it is best to use a Point system. Other adjustable features include maximum grade, grading method, grade category, grade to pass, blind grading, grading workflow, and grading allocation.  To change these features, use the drop down boxes next to each individual feature. 

NOTE: Grading workflow allows an instructor to work through a process of grading an assignment and then releasing all scores at once or on an individual basis.

Common module settings

These settings specify the visibility of the assignment for students (Hide/Show), and the group mode and grouping can be designated. NOTE: if group submissions are allowed, the Grouping should match in each menu area.

Restrict access

The assignment can be restricted based upon a date, group, activity completion of another activity/resource in the course, etc.

NOTE: If more than one restriction is added, students must meet EACH of the requirements before the assignment becomes available.

Activity completion

By default, students can manually mark the assignment as complete, but an instructor can change this to be required. If required, the students can be marked complete by viewing the activity, receiving a grade, and/or submitting the assignment.

Tags

Tags are keywords that can be added to an activity or resource.
