The following is a guide to adding a machine to the LSU ITS Active Directory system.
By default, adding a workstation to the domain that hasn't been pre-staged will add that computer to the AD's Computer container. If you pre-stage the machine into your Organizational Unit, the computer will appear there automatically and be governed by that OU's group policies.
To pre-stage a machine
**NOTE: The name of the computer object should match the full computer name of the machine. The name should be the departmental ID, a dash, and then the user's logon ID or a room number and station number (for example, jdoe1 in chemistry would have a machine named CHEM-JDOE1 and workstation 10 in a lab at room 224 would be CHEM-LAB224-10).
1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers (under Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Active Directory Users and Computers).
2. In the management console, under the tree on the left hand side, navigate to the Organizational Unit you want to add the computer (either Computers or a child OU under Computers).
3. Right click on the object area in the right hand side of the console and scroll over New and select Computer.

Pre-stage Computer 1 – Here we are going to create a new computer object in the Labs OU that was just created.
4. On the New Object - Computer screen,
A. Enter the name of the machine
B. If you won't be adding this machine to the domain, click the change button and add the LSU Id of the user who will be adding this machine.

Pre-stage Computer 2 – If we wanted ccalle2 to add the machine CHEM-LAB224-10 to the domain, we would select that name here and click OK.
C. If this an NT4 machine, put a check mark in "Allow pre-Windows 2000 computers to use this account"

Pre-stage Computer 3 – The Domain Admins group will be registering this machine with the account named CHEM-LAB224-10 which means that the machine is Workstation #10 in a lab in Room 224.
D. Click Next
5. If you want to use Remote Installation Services, put a check mark in the Managed Computer box. Click Next

Pre-stage Computer 4 – This computer won’t be managed, so we leave the check mark undone.
6. Click Finish.

Pre-stage Computer 5 – This is the last screen showing the full name of the newly created Computer object.
7. The computer account is now created in the OU

Pre-stage Computer 5 – Here we have a new computer account named CHEM-LAB224-10 waiting for the machine to be attached to the network and joined to the domain.
Go to the computer; add the domain to the Network Identification tab (by right clicking on My Computer), ensuring that the name of the machine is the name you pre-staged in step 4A.
