Detailed Instructions

If your system is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 you must install Microsoft hotfix update KB885453. This update fixes a problem most computers have when authenticating to a secure wireless network. To download the hotfix, click HERE

1. Click Start-->Run then type ncpa.cpl and press OK.

Then, right click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties. You should see at least two tabs: General and Wireless Networks.  If you don't see the Wireless Networks tab, you need to enable the Wireless Zero Configuration service.

2. Click the Wireless Networks tab. Check Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings and then click Add

3. Type lsusecure under Network name (SSID) and select WPA (or WPA2) for Network Authentication and TKIP (or AES if you picked WPA2) for Data Encryption. If you don't see these options, either the drivers for your wireless adapter need to be updated or it is likely that your adapter doesn't support WPA.

4. Click the Authentication tab and select PEAP as the EAP type. Check Authenticate as computer when computer information is available

5. Click Properties and check all the boxes as depicted below. Under Connect to these servers type in the name acs-wlan.net.lsu.edu;acs-wlan.lsu.edu  Under Trusted Root Certification Authorities check the box GTE CyberTrust Global Root. Under Select Authentication Method select Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) from the drop down menu.

6. Click the Configure button in the previous window. If your computer is a member of the LSU domain and you logon to your computer using your PAWS username and password, check the box "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password". Otherwise, make sure that the check box is not selected. (If you don't know whether your machine belongs to the LSU domain, click HERE and read the FAQ entitled "10. How do I know if my computer belongs to the LSU domain?"

7. Click OK in the last window and all of the remaining windows. If your computer belongs to the LSU domain and you checked the box "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password", your computer should connect to lsusecure automatically. Otherwise a message should pop up at the lower right corner of your desktop asking you to process your logon information. Click on the message and enter your PAWS username and password and leave the "Logon Domain" field empty.

If your computer does not connect at all, right-click the Wireless Network Connection icon (see step 1) and select View Available Wireless Networks.  Find lsusecure under Choose a wireless network and double click it.  If you are still unable to connect to lsusecure, click HERE and read the FAQ entitled "11. My computer is unable to connect to lsusecure".

8. (If you have updated your XP system to service pack 3, you do not need to follow this step). If you unchecked the box "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password", Windows XP will automatically cache your PEAP credentials for reuse. There is no workaround to prevent this. After you have changed your PAWS password, you will need to delete the cached credentials in your machine so that you can be prompted to enter your new password. In order to delete the cached credentials, you can either delete "lsusecure" from your preferred networks, and then add it again, or you can delete them straight from the registry. The following script will automatically delete the cached credentials: removeEAPinfo.zip  Click on the link "removeEAPinfo.zip". Extract and save the file "removeEAPinfo.reg" in a convenient location. Double-clicking the file should run the script and remove your credentials. For more information about this issue, visit the Microsoft support website and search for article ID 823731.
